About Us

Our
Story
The Re\\Thread Project was born from the mind of Carisa Kelly. While working countless years in the industry, Kelly realized crucial resources were disappearing for costume industry professionals on the east coast. With a few nudges and support from the founding board and other industry professionals, The Re\\Thread Project was created.

We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing resources to costume professionals entering and/or established in the industry. Our inaugural apprentice program launched in 2024, partnering young professionals with New York City costume workrooms.

Carisa saw a production of James and the giant peach at Seattle Children’s Theatre, the glistening peach emerged from the stage floor, and she was hooked, the threads of a costume designer in the making.
Carisa worked to collect over 300 signatures for Helen Uffner to help show the importance of Helen’s vintage clothing collection in NYC.
She also worked with Save the Garment District to help protect our industry's resources.
The seeds of Re\\Thread started as our industry was in a slow down in anticipation of the WGA and SAG strikes
In September of 2023, Re\\thread became an official 502(c)3 and received our first few donations
Summer of 2024 saw the launch of our Apprentice Program in partnership with local costume shops inside New York City.
